Western Michigan University: New director takes helm in Distance Education
Kaml, whose appointment was effective July 1, has 10 years of experience in the field of instructional technology and distance education.
In his new post, his duties include overseeing WMU’s self-instructional, interactive television and Internet programs; developing long- and short-term plans to meet the emerging technologies and market needs of these programs, exploring ways of attracting more faculty to teach in divergent technologies, and studying trends and researching new technology for future development and program expansion.
Kaml comes to WMU from North Carolina, where he had been serving as assistant director for distance learning at East Carolina University since 2000.
Previously, he was director of instructional technology for the Teacher Education Program at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina from 1996 to 2000, an instructional computer technology support specialist at Craven Community College in North Carolina from 1993 to 1996 and a Hawk missile systems repair/electronic technician in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1988 to 1993.
In addition to presenting a variety of papers and workshops, Kaml has taught several courses in instructional computer technology, local area networks, database systems, word processing and use of Windows software.
He also has been involved in numerous curriculum development projects, including a master of public administration program in Russia, an online birth through kindergarten add-on licensure program, distance education programs in behavior and emotional disorders and specific learning disabilities, and teacher education graduate programs.
Kaml earned an associate of arts degree in business computer programming from Craven College in 1992; a bachelor of science degree in computer information systems from North Carolina Wesleyan College in 1994; a master of arts degree in education in instructional technology specialist-computers from East Carolina University in 1996; and a doctor of education degree in educational leadership from East Carolina in 2001.
