Teaching and learning in competency-based education courses and programs: faculty and student perspectives
From January through May 2015, interviews were conducted with faculty and students at three community colleges supporting new competency-based education (CBE) courses and programs to better understand faculty and student experiences in the early phases of implementation. Participation in CBE certificate and degree-granting programs required faculty to redesign existing and/or develop new courses as well as modify their teaching methods. Some faculty found that CBE improved their instruction. Students embraced opportunities to accelerate their learning while meeting career and life goals. Students felt that CBE courses were best suited to more experienced students who are self-directed and self-disciplined.
