That was part of what he was doing from June 1943 to July 1945 while serving in Europe as an infantryman in the Army. He could have stayed home in Jamaica, Queens, and grappled with trigonometry or memorized bits of “The Faerie Queene.” Instead he chose to fight the Nazis from Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.
