Portland Education Company Selected by Alaska Education Officials
Education Web Site Uses Unique Digital Whiteboard Technology
That Permits Real-Time Instruction and Live Student-Teacher Dialogue.
PORTLAND, OR – March 5, 2003. Alaska education officials have announced that the Portland company Renaissance Education Group, Inc. has been selected as one of only two state-approved supplemental education services providers. Through their proprietary PersonalProfessors.com learning system, the company delivers live and interactive instruction in high school math and science.
Under the federal No Child Left Behind act , schools that fail to make adequate yearly progress as measured by test scores are required to provide for families supplemental education services. The No Child Left Behind act applies in all 50 states.
Using unique streaming technology, PersonalProfessors.com faculty are able to teach on the Internet via a live digital whiteboard coupled with voice. As in a classroom with a chalkboard, the digital whiteboard allows teachers to illustrate examples, work math problems, and give dynamic instruction in real-time.
“We believe that text content and static images, while important for learning, are poorly suited to Web-based education systems and are best left to books and CD-ROMs,” said Michael Hosking, president and founder of Renaissance Education Group. “Our unique approach is built on the assumption that the Web is a communication tool, not a publication medium. The company currently offers instruction in high school algebra and biology, and will soon expand it’s offerings to include chemistry and physics. They are in discussions with potential partners to round out their curriculum with advanced online laboratory technologies. This summer they will offer state-specific test prep courses designed to assist students with state-mandated exams.
