Lightspan eduTest Assessment Credited With Improved Student Achievement in Roswell, New Mexico School District

May 16, 2003

Elementary campuses in the Roswell Independent School District (ISD) experienced an average 155 percent academic growth in math, reading, and language arts during the past school year. All of the district’s 15 elementary campuses registered academic growth on state-mandated tests that exceeded 100 percent of typical growth from the previous year. Typical growth is based on academic growth in cohort groups from grade level to grade level and within content areas. Elementary scores in the district ranged from 119 percent to 204 percent, with two campuses demonstrating growth that exceeded 200 percent. Last year, five campuses were identified as needing improvement by the New Mexico State Department of Education. These results are provided by the school district.

Roswell ISD superintendent Dr. Manuel B. Rodriguez credits the district’s teachers and students, and adds: “Lightspan eduTest Assessment also played a key role in our strategy for improving student performance, providing teachers, administrators and students with real-time, critical information on academic progress. Teachers were able to monitor academic growth and adjust instruction according to specific student needs in each classroom, allowing the district to meet significant new federal reporting requirements.”

Last year, Roswell ISD implemented Lightspan eduTest Assessment and Lightspan Assessment Builder to track student performance, identify areas of academic strength and weakness, and disaggregate data to comply with the accountability and reporting provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Lightspan CEO John Kernan said: “We are very proud to have contributed to the academic improvement of students in the Roswell Independent School District. This demonstrates how the right tools in the hands of students, teachers, and administrators can empower the entire school community.”
