Jones International University and Ball Corporation Create Virtual Classroom
DENVER (July 18, 2000) JonesKnowledge.com subsidiary Jones International University ; , Ltd. (JIU), the first fully online accredited university, and Ball Corporation (Ball), the Broomfield, Colo.-based food and beverage container company and its subsidiary Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp. (BATC), announced today that they have formed a partnership to deliver online education programs focused on the professional growth of Ball Corporation’s 12,500 employees. JIU and Ball formed this partnership because of the increasing demand for convenient and cost-effective continuing education.
s partnership with JIU exemplifies our ongoing commitment to attract and retain top-quality employees,” said Don Vanlandingham, president and CEO of Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp.
JIU and Ball jointly designed six specialized professional certificate programs for Ball employees. Each program consists of three or four courses at the bachelor or graduate level and are taught completely online. These courses range from “Introduction to Management,” which teaches the fundamentals of business writing and interpersonal communication, to “Executive Leadership” and “Advanced International Management,” which focus on global strategies and emerging technologies. The information and skills that are taught in the courses can be applied immediately on the job.
“Our vision is to deliver learning solutions to meet the needs of our employees,” said Lawry Scicluna, senior director, administrative and support services, Ball Corporation. “The key for Ball Corporation is to structure an environment that nurtures creative and innovative learning systems. Our goal is to create the virtual classroom where learning takes place at your convenience, anytime and anyplace you choose.”
s Packaging Training in this innovative partnership with JIU. Management and leadership courses are among the top continuing education requests we receive and the chance to offer an online alternative to traditional brick and mortar college courses is exciting,” said Amelia Ebaugh, manager of management and organization development at Ball Aerospace.
Online access allows students to study from home, from work or from the road. JIU courses are delivered on the JonesKnowledge.com courseware management software e-education . This comprehensive, end-to-end online learning solution is simple to use and one of the most innovative course facilitation methods available via the Internet. The university employs specialized content experts and facilitators to design and teach the course material. Courses are offered every month, giving students the flexibility of starting when it’s convenient for them.
Besides the six specialized certificates, Ball employees can take advantage of JIU’s high-quality undergraduate degree programs, graduate degree programs, and more than 26 other professional certificate programs. All JIU course offerings take full advantage of the power of the Internet to foster communication, collaboration, and skill acquisition. As JIU students, Ball employees have the opportunity to work independently and collaboratively as they analyze and resolve a variety of real-life problems, transform business theory into action steps for professional success, and implement immediately what is learned online.
Ball employees earn college credit for every course they successfully complete. Before beginning their first course, students are guided through orientation to get them prepared for online college-level coursework. Typically, students spend an average of 6-12 hours per week working on their courses. This time is spent interacting with students and professors and accessing course content, as well as completing assignments and tests. Because communication is done via email or in the class forum, students can communicate at any time and get quick responses. Students also have access to e-global library , the university’s Internet-based research library.
“The future belongs to those who master technology and information today,” said JIU president Dr. Pamela Pease. “Ball Corporation and JIU have developed certificate programs in which students not only gain important knowledge, but also learn the skills that will move them forward in today’s information-driven workforce.”
