The courses include an overview, which discusses the fundamentals of patient privacy and the associated legal requirements, as well as specialized training courses for specific healthcare constituencies: executives and department heads, HIPAA task force members and compliance officers, physicians and office staffs, and insurance verifiers, coders, and other employees involved in the transfer of medical information.

The federal privacy regulation guarantees patient access to medical records, gives patients more control over how health information is used and disclosed, and provides a clear avenue of recourse if medical privacy is compromised. The rule will protect medical records and other personal health information maintained by healthcare providers, hospitals, health plans, and health insurers. Organizations have until April 14, 2003 to comply with the training requirements outlined for privacy protection.
