Europe’s First eLearning Summit in Brussels (10-11 May)
Viviane Reding, European Commissioner in charge of Education and Culture, will host the first eLearning Summit, organised together with the industry, in La Hulpe, Brussels, at the end of this week. Ministers and representative of leading ICT and multimedia companies will examine possible publicprivate partnerships for the implementation of the eLearning Action Plan adopted by the Commission on 28 March. The Action Plan aims at promoting co-operation between European institutions, Member States, education and training practitioners and economic players for the use of new information and communication technologies in schools.
A large number of leading companies (information technologies, telecommunications, audiovisual industry, training, publishing industry, etc.) are rallying behind the Action Plan. At the summit meeting, they will discuss with political representatives and education professionals the following topics: skills shortage, access and connectivity, transformation of the current learning model, digital literacy and developing educational multimedia contents. Examples of best practices in eLearning and concrete viable funding models to be implemented through public private partnerships will be presented. The participants will also try to identify current obstacles to the development of eLearning.
The main outcomes of the Summit will be presented to the Education Council on 28 May. A Council Resolution on eLearning should be adopted under the Swedish Presidency. The Commission will organise a workshop in June to support the implementation of the conclusions of the summit.
