President Vicente Fox to Address Jones International University Class of 2002
DENVER (April-16-2002) – Jones International University® (JIU), the
first fully online, accredited university, announced today that Mexican President
Vicente Fox will be the keynote speaker at its May 13 commencement ceremonies.
In keeping with its students’ day-to-day learning environment, JIU will conduct
the event online at www.jonesinternational.edu, where Fox’s remarks will be
Webcast. The cyber graduation will be accessible to all visitors to the Web
site.
"We are deeply honored to have President Fox address our graduating class
this year," said Dr. Pamela S. Pease, president of JIU. "As an international
university, it is particularly valuable for our students to hear the views of
such a well-respected world leader."
JIU has a diverse and rich student population from more than 100 countries,
with curriculum designed specifically for an online learning environment by
experts from institutions such as Georgetown University, Stanford University,
University of Oxford, Carnegie Mellon University, and London School of Economics.
It is considered a pioneer in the world of online education.
"President Fox has mandated universal access to education as one of Mexico’s
highest priorities," Pease continued, "and is actively working to
make e-learning more widely available in his country. No audience could better
appreciate his advocacy of online education than the students graduating from
Jones International University. They know the difference it has made in their
lives."
Fox and his administration have launched a national initiative known as "e-Mexico,"
designed to make Internet connectivity available to more of Mexico’s homes,
schools and businesses, eventually reaching some 10,000 of Mexico’s cities and
98% of its populace. Incorporated into the project is a five-year plan to bring
SchoolNet, Mexico’s online education service, to all 130,000 of the country’s
schools.
The members of JIU’s sixth graduating class will be receiving Bachelor of Arts
in Business Communication, Master of Arts in Business Communication, and Master
of Business Administration degrees. Commencement exercises will begin with a
Webcast of the degree conferment ceremony, followed by an online chat session
that will enable faculty, students and guests to celebrate with JIU’s Class
of 2002. The ceremony can be viewed on May 13 at 11:00 A.M. EST by logging onto
