Vbrick Systems Launches World’s First Real-Time MPEG-2 to Windows Media Transcoder

September 18, 2001

VBrick Systems today unveiled the world’s first real-time MPEG-2 to Microsoft’s Windows Media transcoder. The new product, called `VBXcoder’ enables customers to deploy one-way or two-way MPEG video with true DVD-quality throughout their existing enterprise networks and stream that same video over the Internet.

VBXcoder includes advanced features that enable streaming video via the Internet automatically, on a scheduled basis or at will. The product is ideal for enterprises that demand high quality MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 live video for education, security & monitoring, and other critical applications, but also need to reach employees, customers or others who have less than full broadband connectivity.

“Until now, enterprises have had to lower their standards of video quality in order to reach a wide audience,” said Rich Mavrogeanes, VBrick’s founder. “With the VBXcoder, it is no longer necessary to encode their video to the lowest common denominator. Instead, enterprises can have MPEG-2 providing true DVD quality videoeverywhere on their intranet with that same video digitally transcoded to Microsoft’s Windows Media streaming format for lower bandwidth Internet viewers.”

“VBrick Systems provides a great tool for enterprises to extend their communications with high-quality Windows Media streams,” said Jonathan Usher, group manager of the Windows Digital Media Division at Microsoft Corp. “Products such as VBXcoder make it easier for companies to stream high-quality Windows Media audio and video over the Internet to improve their communications and lower their costs.”

VBXcoder supports more than 1,000 simultaneous viewers and supports Internet streaming rates from 28.8 Kbps for dial-up viewers to 384 Kbps for Cable and DSL viewers. VBXcoder is fully compatible with Microsoft Windows Media server and can be used as the source for streaming video to third-party Web-hosting companies.
