Webcast: Abraham Lincoln Institute Fifth Annul Symposium

The free fifth annual symposium of the Abraham Lincoln Institute of the Mid-Atlantic will be held this year at the Library of Congress, 9am-5pm in the Coolidge Auditorium of the Thomas Jefferson Building (10 First Street, S.E., Washington, D.C.). It will be co-sponsored by the Manuscript Division and the Rare Book and Special Collections Division of the Library of Congress.

This year’s program will feature presentations by five nationally respected scholars. William Lee Miller, author of the newly published Lincoln’s Virtues, will look at the moral development of the 16th President in “I Felt it My Duty to Refuse: a Presidential Pardon Case.” Renowned historian and commentator Doris Kearns Goodwin will investigate the political and person dealings within “Lincoln’s White House.” Ronald C. White of the San Francisco Theological Seminary will hold forth on the theological aspects of “Lincoln’s Sermon on the Mount: the Second Inaugural.” Author of Blood on the Moon, Edward Steers, Jr. will present his findings on “The Lincoln Assassination–A Case of Historical Malpractice.” The Symposium will culminate with John R. Sellers, Manuscript Division, Library of Congress, discussing the surprising information found within the diary of Horatio Nelson Taft in “Lincoln’s Washington: a Divided City.”

Question-and-answer sessions follow the individual addresses and the afternoon Speakers Panel will maximize audience participation. The Symposium’s climax will come with the presentation of the third annual Hay-Nicolay Scholars prize and the fifth annual Abraham Lincoln Institute Book Award.
