central Alaska — roughly the size of the state of West Virginia. There are 214 students, all of whom live in rural areas with some accessible only by air. A staff of 30 serves students from preschool up to age 21. Between 1975 and 1994, one student from Chugach went on to college, and reading scores were in the 28th percentile. Students were left behind because they were isolated in one of the most rural parts of America.
