University of San Francisco Latest to Don Digital Campus

April 30, 2002

The University of San Francisco announced it has purchased a license to use the Campus Pipeline™ Web Platform and intends to unify its existing technologies and form a service-oriented digital campus for its faculty, staff and approximately 8,000 students.

Careful planning, evaluation, and prioritizing contributed to the decision to use the Campus Pipeline Web Platform. “We spent about two years researching possible platforms and evaluating our needs,” says USF’s E-Campus Director Tracy Schroeder. “We needed to ensure compatibility with our existing SCT systems, as well as the ability to integrate access to other systems across the campus. We offer our students many services, and we wanted to be able to tie them all together. Integrated messaging, targeted content, e-mail, calendar, and course tools were also identified as crucial.”

“A strategic initiative of ours is to provide an attractive campus environment and the resources necessary to promote learning throughout the University, including technology solutions to enhance learning and improve service, and learning resources that improve the curriculum and support scholarship,” continued Schroeder. “The Campus Pipeline Web Platform provides the foundation necessary to fulfill the online aspect of our initiative, helping us reach our institutional mission.”

The Campus Pipeline Web Platform is enterprise integration software that serves as a foundation for the digital campus, a network that integrates data, portals, calendars, and other campus technologies under a single online roof, giving campus constituents anytime, anywhere access to an institution’s information, services, and communities.

Beginning in the fall of 2002, The University of San Francisco will provide constituents with single sign-on, Web-based access to a variety of services and information sources through the digital campus including:

  • Official campus Web-based email,

  • Personal, course, and group calendars pre-populated with course schedules and university events,

  • Tools for the creation of campus organization Web sites,

  • Course management tools and course Web sites,

  • Personalized university announcements, and

  • Online registration and grade checking systems.

The university hopes to eventually incorporate all of its Web-based systems into the digital campus to provide maximum convenience for students, faculty, and staff. Because the Web Platform enables technologies to communicate automatically, it relieves university constituents of many mundane tasks, enabling them to focus on the teaching and learning process.

The University of San Francisco is joining more than 150 institutions of higher education worldwide that rely on Campus Pipeline products and services to support their digital campuses. The Web Platform produces measurable improvements to student service while decreasing operational costs. For example, Campus Pipeline partner institutions report:

  • Decreasing calls to the help desk while increasing constituent access to integrated services,

  • Increasing faculty use of technology and reducing the time needed to create online course support, and

  • Expanding the availability of information to appropriate constituents while reducing distribution costs and time.

Based on open standards, Campus Pipeline technologies including the Campus Pipeline Web Platform and the Luminis™ product family, can integrate with student information systems, course management systems, and other applications from organizations including Datatel, JA-SIG, Jenzabar, Oracle, PeopleSoft, Poise, SCT, Blackboard, eCollege, and WebCT, enabling institutions to create their unique vision of a digital campus. Pricing for Campus Pipeline products and services vary based on institution size and customization requirements.
