Union Pacific Selects Plateau Systems to Manage Learning and Regulatory Compliance for 48,000 Employees

November 1, 2002

ARLINGTON, VA – October 30, 2002 – Plateau Systems, a provider of enterprise software that manages all of an organization’s learning and knowledge, announced today that Union Pacific Railroad has selected the Plateau 4 Learning Management System (LMS) to manage Web-based and classroom learning for its 48,000 employees.

The implementation of Plateau 4 LMS will greatly reduce Union Pacific Railroad’s travel and resource costs associated with training, and provide strategic direction by consolidating the management of education and corporate knowledge on one enterprise platform. Plateau 4 LMS will enhance Union Pacific’s safety, quality control and regulatory compliance programs by ensuring all employees take the training they need to do their jobs.

As the largest railroad in North America and principal subsidiary of Union Pacific Corp. (NYSE: UNP), Union Pacific Railroad maintains more than 33,000 route miles of railway in 23 states. With its workforce spread across much of the nation, training has been a costly and logistically difficult proposition for the company. Plateau 4 LMS manages all the learning activities that take place in an organization, keeps a time-stamped audit trail of each training event and automatically alerts employees by email when a procedure changes or a certification is about to expire. This ensures Union Pacific’s employees are up to date, and gives administrators the ability to immediately retrieve learning data.

Union Pacific is integrating Plateau 4 LMS with its PeopleSoft Human Resources Information System to automatically generate learning development plans and assess the training needs of its employees. Union Pacific also plans to use Plateau 4 LMS to enhance the many facets of the company’s career development process.

”We are proud to work with one of the nation’s largest transportation companies as it takes an innovative approach to the education and development of its enterprise,” said Paul Sparta, Plateau’s Chairman and CEO.
