UNC [University of North Carolina] Charlotte Uses SCT Luminis Technologies to

MALVERN, Pa. ? November 11, 2003 ? The University of North Carolina at Charlotte opted to use clicks instead of bricks to facilitate and enhance the administrative and academic services it provides to its students. To students, the new virtual “one-stop shop” enabled by SCT Luminis? technologies is just “awesome.”

SCT (Nasdaq:SCTC) highlighted the University’s notable achievements during its participation last week at EDUCAUSE 2003, the premier IT event for higher education.

In an effort to accommodate its growing enrollment, the University considered building a new multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art, “one-stop” student administration center. However, when a new CIO, Karin Steinbrenner, came on board in 2000 she questioned whether expanding the physical campus was the right approach for accomplishing their goal and effectively utilizing funds. Ultimately, University leaders decided to use SCT Luminis technologies to create a virtual student center through its SCT Luminis enterprise portal to support even more students, faculty, and staff.

“The portal helped us to customize something for the students. It is designed around students’ comments and their perspective, and that makes them more likely to use it,” said Charles Bodkin, associate professor at the Belk College of Business Administration. “Students tell us they think it’s really awesome.”

“Using SCT Luminis, we are delivering more and better service to more people,” said Steinbrenner. “The portal really puts the user in the center of the services. Now, departments have to cater to the user. That’s what makes the portal concept so unique and that’s why it’s so popular.”

In addition, the SCT Luminis technologies are delivering these services at much less cost than building and staffing a physical facility. “We are realizing improved service at a substantially lower cost than building a new facility, and we are confident that we can scale our service delivery to meet a projected increase in enrollment of about 5,000 students over the next five years,” said Steinbrenner.

Today, students at the University can view their grades, register for courses, access email and tap into other campus services through the portal. The portal is also benefiting faculty and staff.

“After we understood the product better, we realized that it would improve the lives of faculty and staff, too,” said Patricia Barber, associate CIO at the UNC Charlotte. “We were quite pleased with the process SCT used for installing the software. Having the right people to consult with and really help us was key to delivering a good product.”
