Cybrarians perform slightly different functions from a distance. Perhaps most importantly, they help educators and students use a growing array of shared resource collections, including educational databases, learning object repositories, and standards-based instructional materials. Cybrarians may also serve as online reference experts. Together, Farmer predicts, SLMSs and cybrarians will form the backbone of a two-tiered educational system that will change the way students consume and produce knowledge by 2015.
