Sybase® will offer automated real-time language translation in its Enterprise Portal Product as a tool to enhance the global business communications of its customers

Atlanta, GA – September 26, 2000—

Transparent Language, Inc., a leading developer of language technology for corporate markets, today announced that Sybase, Inc. has purchased licenses for the Enterprise Translation Server™ for integration into the Portal Translation Manager of Sybase Enterprise Portal.

Portal Translation Manager (PTM) is an option for Sybase’s enterprise portal which will provide real-time translations of documents or data flowing through the portal upon request. Under the terms of the license, Sybase will offer an evaluation version of the Enterprise Translation Server as part of the Portal Translation Manager. The Enterprise Translation Server will provide Portal Translation Manager business clients with a cross-language communication solution using automated real-time translation.

The Sybase Enterprise Portal (EP) is a customizable platform offering that integrates global business IT systems and personalizes them for the Web. By integrating the Enterprise Translation Server into the portal offering, Sybase can now offer its customers a powerful translation solution that enables real-time translations of portal applications, Intranet and Web pages. Instant real-time translation provides corporations with the power to deliver information to and communicate with customers, suppliers and employees in multiple languages.

“Increasingly, Internet business is taking place in a language other than English, and it is imperative that our customers have the ability to cross-language enable their internet portals,” said Tim Fallen-Bailey, director of the Global Products Group at Sybase. “Transparent Language’s Enterprise Translation Server enables Sybase to provide a scaleable, multilingual solution for our Enterprise Portal customers, and is a key component in our customer’s globalization strategies.”

“Now that the Internet has eliminated geography as a barrier, language remains the main impediment to effective communication and understanding in global organizations,” said Michael Quinlan, founder and president of Transparent Language. “The Enterprise Translation Server integrated into the Portal Translation Manager provides Sybase with the ability to offer its customers a powerful solution for real-time cross-language communication within the context of their portals. Ultimately, end users are loyal to applications and portals that speak their language.”

About Automated Real-time Translation

Automated real-time translation systems such as the Enterprise Translation Server are linguistically sophisticated machine translation (MT) products programmed with comprehensive dictionaries and a collection of linguistic rules that translate one language into another without relying on human translators. An MT system interprets the structure of sentences in the source language (the language the user is translating from) and generates a translation based on the rules of the target language (the language the user is translating to). The process involves breaking down complex and varying sentence structures, identifying parts of speech, resolving ambiguities, and synthesizing the information into the components and structure of the new language.
