SMARTHINKING Adds Live, Online Math Tutoring In Spanish

October 27, 2004

SMARTHINKING’s bi-lingual math tutorials serve as a “safety-net” for those students whose first language is Spanish. The one-to-one instruction is primarily conducted in English, but tutors have the ability to communicate in Spanish, thus ensuring students’ comprehension. “By combining bilingual math tutoring with the online writing lab’s English language learning specialists, SMARTHINKING provides a powerful support service for students for whom English is a second language,” says Burck Smith, CEO of SMARTHINKING.

A robust academic support infrastructure staffed by trained and experienced educators helps schools attract students and keep students. Over 80% of SMARTHINKING e-structorsÔ have a Masters degree or PhD in their discipline. SMARTHINKING projects that it will provide 300,000 tutoring sessions to 70,000 students in the 2004-2005 academic year. In a survey of nearly 1500 users, 73% of students said that use of SMARTHINKING improved their grade; 93% said they would recommend it to a friend; and 92% said they would use the service again. Corroborating studies conducted by multiple clients confirm that the use of SMARTHINKING’s services improves student performance.

Through the SMARTHINKING website, students may ask questions of trained, qualified e-structors™ (tutors) by “dropping-in,” submitting questions for next-day response, and pre-scheduling sessions. In addition, all interactions are saved, permitting on-demand review and analysis by the student or institution.
