Proposed eMail fee irks educators

To trim the amount of spam eMail targeting its customers, America Online says it will start charging high-volume senders of eMail a voluntary fee if they want to guarantee that their messages reach AOL subscribers. Though the fee would amount to only about $6 per 100,000 messages sent by schools and other nonprofit organizations, critics of the plan say it would set a dangerous precedent–spelling the end of “free and open” internet as we know it.
