Polycom IADs fully interoperable with Cirpack VoDSL Gateway and Class-5 SoftSwitch

February 11, 2002

Cirpack, a leading vendor of next-generation telephony equipment for telecom operators’ infrastructures, and Polycom, Inc. (Nasdaq: PLCM), a worldwide leader in the convergence of interactive voice, video and data communications, today announced that Cirpack has certified the interoperability of Polycom’s NetEngine™ Integrated Access Devices (IADs) with Cirpack’s SoftSwitch and Broadband Gateway products.

The Polycom and Cirpack solution allows telecom service providers to dramatically reduce the cost of their network infrastructure and quickly offer innovative Voice over DSL (VoDSL) services to small and medium-sized businesses. The solution combines Polycom’s NetEngine IADs and Cirpack’s Class-5 SoftSwitch, the leading SoftSwitch solution according to Infonetics Research.

“Deploying voice services over DSL without purchasing expensive legacy local exchange switches allows operators to save up to 50 percent on the cost of their VoDSL infrastructure,” said Didier Heen, Cirpack’s vice president for Marketing and Partnerships. “This significant savings is made possible by using our Class-5 SoftSwitch. With the Polycom/Cirpack solution, service providers can now enter the DSL market with attractive telephony services and profitable business plans.”

“Polycom’s goal has always been to offer its customers high-quality, affordable and reliable Voice over Broadband solutions that can adapt easily to evolving network standards,” said Hans Schwarz, senior vice president and general manager of network access products for Polycom. “Ensuring the interoperability of our NetEngine IADs with leaders in next-generation telephony equipment like Cirpack helps us reach that goal.”

Service Providers without voice infrastructure can use Cirpack S5 Class-5 SoftSwitch to easily offer advanced voice services with low investment and operational costs (CAPEX reduced by 50% and OPEX by 70%). Today, Cirpack is the only vendor allowing operators to build an entire public switching architecture supporting all network protocols (IP, ATM, TDM, SS7) and capable of delivering a wide range of services (ISDN PRI and BRI, VoDSL, VoWLL, VoIP) without any TDM switching equipment.

For operators that have already deployed legacy TDM equipment, the Cirpack G16M Broadband Gateway extends legacy local exchange switches to new broadband services. It connects the DSL local loop which transports voice traffic over ATM (AAL1 or AAL2) to the legacy Class-5 Local Exchange switch only providing TDM interfaces (E1 or SDH).

Polycom’s NetEngine family of broadband access equipment is designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as the small office/home office (SOHO) and telecommuter markets. NetEngine IADs feature a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet LAN interface, complete routing and bridging, integrated firewall capabilities, NAT and DHCP, and toll-quality voice to a choice of 4 or 8 POTS phone or 4 ISDN BRI interfaces.

For service providers deploying voice over broadband services using ADSL, the Polycom NetEngine 6100-4 and NetEngine 6108 provide four- and eight- POTS ports, and the NetEngine 6104i provides four ISDN BRI ports for voice. For operators looking to expand their service area using G.shdsl, NetEngine 6504 and NetEngine 6508 provide four- and eight- POTS ports, and the NetEngine 6504i provides four ISDN BRI ports for voice.

About CIRPACK’s IAD Alliance Program

CIRPACK has launched its IAD certification Program at the beginning of 2001 including the leading IAD manufacturers (Integrated Access Devices, customer premise equipment bundling voice and data traffic onto one single phone line). The goal is to certify full interoperability of IADs with CIRPACK’s equipment to allow operators to choose those IADs that are the most appropriate for the services they offer.

CIRPACK stands apart from its competitors by certifying IADs with both its Class-5 SoftSwitches (NGN architecture) and its V5.2 Broadband Gateways (TDM architecture). To obtain certification, IADs have to go through a series of strict tests in CIRPACK’s labs. Some IAD manufacturers have undertaken to repeat certification tests at each new software release. These PREMIUM PARTNERS wish to guarantee that their IADs will operate in all situations with CIRPACK SoftSwitches and voice gateways.

About CIRPACK

CIRPACK is a leading equipment vendor for telecom operators’ converged voice infrastructure (PSTN). Our universal open platform supports simultaneous TDM, ATM and IP voice traffics and protocols. CIRPACK solutions are fast and easy to deploy and allow savings of 50% in CAPEX (investments costs) and 70% in OPEX (operating costs). CIRPACK deployed the world largest SoftSwitch-based TDM/Packet PSTN, supporting 100% of this operator’s voice revenues, as early as 1998.

In the current telephony revolution, CIRPACK is the only vendor offering a non-disruptive carrier-class platform supporting any migration path from legacy proprietary TDM switches to the open packet-telephony model (NGN). CIRPACK’s telephony platform is highly scalable and can be changed to any converged telephony element by a simple software download.

CIRPACK is headquartered in Suresnes near Paris, with subsidiaries in the United States and Great Britain. CIRPACK’s customers include Kaptech, Tiscali, Soleos, Free Telecom and MTE among others.
