Plateau Systems Chief Technology Officer Edward Cohen Named to AICC Leadership Post

July 15, 2003

ARLINGTON, VA – July 14, 2003 – Plateau Systems, the leading provider of enterprise learning management systems (LMS), announced today that Edward Cohen, Plateau’s Chief Technology Officer, has been elected to a leadership position in the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC), one of the main standards-setting and certification organizations for the e-Learning industry. Cohen will chair the AICC’s Training Infrastructure Subcommittee, which establishes guidelines for e-Learning networks, issues recommendations for different operating systems, works to prolong the life of training content, and ensures future migration across evolving hardware and software systems.

Cohen is the only AICC subcommittee chair not drawn from the aviation industry. As a subcommittee chair, Cohen will have substantial input within the AICC’s Executive subcommittee. This subcommittee guides the organization’s strategic direction and administration. AICC and SCORM (the Sharable Content Object Reference Model) are considered the two primary standards for the e-Learning industry. Compliance with these standards gives customers assurance that software such as Plateau 4 Learning Management System (LMS) is compatible with other conforming Web-based learning content and courseware, and can be used across multiple industries. Plateau 4 LMS is AICC-certified and conforms to the latest SCORM specifications.

“For several years, Ed Cohen has been an active contributor to AICC’s planning process through the debate and decision-making of the general committee,” said William A. McDonald, AICC CMI Subcommittee chair and Learning Technology Architect at Alteon (Boeing’s aviation training company). “The membership recognized Ed’s expertise in the emerging technology issues we face as we work toward total interoperability among different learning platforms and content providers, and he is an excellent choice to lead the Training Infrastructure Subcommittee.”

“I’m proud that the AICC leadership asked me to serve in this position, and I’m looking forward to addressing the important challenges that lie ahead as learning technology evolves and advances in new directions,” Cohen said.

Established in 1988, the AICC has an international roster of 100 voting members from several industries and most major e-Learning providers. The organization meets twice a year; its next meeting is scheduled for October 6-10 in Toulouse, France. Cohen was elected to his position at the organization’s June 23-27 meeting in Minneapolis. AICC chairpersons serve for indefinite terms, and all AICC members can participate in subcommittee proceedings.

While the AICC originated as a standards body for the aviation industry – which has a range of complex legacy training content and regulatory pressures that make interoperability essential – the organization’s technical guidelines are designed to apply to multiple industries and are accepted in all corners of the e-Learning world. The AICC coordinates with other standards bodies such as the IMS Global Learning Consortium, the Advanced Distributed Learning initiative (ADL), and the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee.

Cohen joined Plateau in 1999 when Sensory Computing – a pioneering e-Learning content development company founded by Cohen in 1993 – merged with Plateau Systems. He has developed more than 400 course titles on almost every e-Learning technology including CBT, interactive videodisc, CD-I, and the Web. Cohen has authored several articles for leading industry publications, and has been a featured speaker at numerous e-Learning, standards and general technology conferences.
