Description: The Distance Education and Training Council has been the standard-setting agency for correspondence study and distance education institutions since it was established in 1926. Its purpose was, and still is today, "to foster and preserve high quality, educationally sound and widely accepted distance education and independent learning institutions."
The DETC Accrediting Commission performs the institutional accrediting functions of the DETC. DETC member institutions offer more than 500 different academic, vocational, and avocational courses by mail or by telecommunications.

Description: The accrediting organizations identified in this directory are recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Recognition by CHEA affirms that the standards and processes of the accrediting organization are consistent with the academic quality, improvement and accountability expectations that CHEA has established, including the eligibility standard that the majority of institutions or programs each accredits are degree-granting.

Description: The Distance Education and Training Council (formerly the National Home Study Council) is a non-profit [301(3)(6)] educational association located in Washington, D.C. The association also sponsors a nationally recognized accrediting agency called the "Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council."
