Jones International University Introduces Three K-12 Master of Education Degree Specializations

July 24, 2003

Jones International University(R) (JIU(TM)), the first fully online, accredited university, is now offering three new Master of Education degree programs developed for K-12 educators and administrators:
— Master of Education in Elementary Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction;
— Master of Education in Secondary Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction; and
— Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration.

The Master of Education in Elementary Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction degree equips elementary teachers with the knowledge of and expertise in curriculum design, instructional strategies, and assessment approaches that enable all students to achieve high standards.

The Master of Education in Secondary Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction degree provides the necessary tools to implement effective, equitable curricula, provide enhanced instruction, evaluate student learning and help all students achieve high standards.

The Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration degree specialization is suited to individuals preparing for leadership and administrative positions in public and private education at the local, state, and national levels. It also leads to preparation for a principal’s license. The curriculum covers national and local issues affecting education and includes development of mastery in strategic planning, organizational management, and accountability.

As with all of its programs, JIU has brought together some of the world’s most innovative and experienced professionals to create its M.Ed. programs. Content for the courses in JIU’s nine M.Ed. degree specializations was created by educators from such prestigious institutions as Carnegie Mellon University, American University and Claremont Graduate University.

“The Master of Education degree has always been considered an important milestone for K-12 teachers,” said Dr. Pamela S. Pease, JIU’s president. “It not only improves the skills and knowledge teachers have to offer their students, but it represents a key component of career advancement.”

According to the U.S. Department of Education, working teachers seeking Master of Education degrees represent the largest single portion of the total master’s degree student population. Of the 1.6 million master’s degree candidates enrolled in the U.S., 28 percent are seeking Master of Education degrees.
