Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey to deploy Akamai EdgeSuiteSM to deliver Virtual University portal with greater reach and reliability

July 10, 2002

As an alternative to complex measures for expanding its physical, global infrastructure, ITESM will leverage Akamai’s globally distributed platform and EdgeSuite service to reach Virtual University participants and prospects, anywhere in the world, with optimal performance and on-demand scalability.

“Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey is committed to increasing the availability of world-class, higher education throughout Mexico and the Latin American community, and the Virtual University is achieving significant strides towards this goal,” said Ciro Velázquez, IT director, Virtual University. “By working with Akamai and TechniData, we’re able to take advantage of the Internet to bring high-quality, continuing education courses to the desktops of end users, no matter their location, with unfaltering performance and reliability.”

EdgeSuite will enable the whole site delivery of the Virtual University portal (http://www.ruv.itesm.mx/), which provides education programs for professionals in various fields across numerous Latin American countries and the United States. By off-loading the portal’s delivery to the Akamai Platform, including live and on-demand streaming media, rich content, and HTML, ITESM can avoid complex, international infrastructure build-out while increasing its ability to deliver online courses, facilitate student/faculty communications, administer exams, and reach prospective students, among other Web initiatives.

“Distance learning is proving to be a highly valuable application with a demonstrable ROI for both educational institutions and enterprises with geographically dispersed students and employees,” said Michael Ruffolo, executive vice president, Global Sales, Services and Marketing, Akamai. “Together with TechniData, we’re pleased to help a recognized leader like ITESM meet growing demand for its Virtual University programs without the traditional, centralized infrastructure costs and limitations.”

“Working with Akamai, TechniData is focused on helping Mexican businesses and organizations like ITESM to cost-efficiently ensure their e-business infrastructure for varying levels of end user demand,” said Felipe Pérez Quijano, director of Sales, TechniData. “We look forward to assisting ITESM in its ambitious efforts to expand the scope of the Virtual University while stretching the value of its infrastructure investments.”

Akamai EdgeSuite is an integrated suite of outsourced services designed to fulfill a broad range of e-business infrastructure needs, including content and application delivery, content targeting, and business intelligence, while providing unmatched scalability and continual uptime for an enterprise’s global Web operations. Following a period of rigorous testing, EdgeSuite was proven to significantly increase the performance of ITESM’s Web properties, including the Virtual University, for end users in numerous countries and cities. EdgeSuite enables whole site delivery from the Akamai Platform, an integrated set of Akamai’s core technologies and massively distributed network infrastructure, which places content and Web applications close to requesting users, thereby avoiding congestion points on the Internet.
