Gov Online Learning Center Powered by GeoLearning Saves Taxpayers $20 Million

February 5, 2003

$20 million cost avoidance achieved in first 20 weeks; GeoLearning LMS is the engine behind federal government’s e-learning solution estimated to save taxpayers more than $1 billion over 10 years.

The federal government’s Gov Online Learning Center, an e-learning site powered by GeoLearning’s GeoMaestro™ learning management system, has saved taxpayers approximately $20 million in its first 20 weeks of operation. The site was originally launched in July 2002 and enhanced at the end of January with the addition of over 3,000 fee-for-service e-learning products and competency management tools.

The enhanced version of www.golearn.gov provides one-stop access to e-training services for more than 1.8 million people employed by the federal government, making it the e-learning industry’s largest implementation.

“This is a great day for employees, who have access to a larger number of convenient educational job aides,” said OPM Director Kay Coles James at a briefing on January 30. “This is a great day for managers who rely on employees for staying on the cutting edge in their jobs.”

As one of 24 electronic government initiatives designed to make the federal government more efficient and citizen friendly, the site has already achieved tangible, measurable results. At the OPM briefing Michael Fitzgerald, OPM’s e-Training Project Manager shared the following statistics: In the first 20 weeks since it was launched, the Gov Online site logged more than 35 million hits, signed up more than 36,000 registered users, counted more than 600,000 unique visitors, recorded over 10,000 course completions, and achieved cost avoidance of approximately $20 million.

The enhanced site will generate savings by reducing tuition costs and eliminating the need for employees to travel to training sessions, according to James, and Mark Forman, associate director for technology and e-government at the Office of Management and Budget. Taxpayers will save $1.19 billion over the next 10 years, James estimated. They will also gain “smarter, more productive employees,” she added.
