David Gray, UMass VP for Information Technology, Named CEO of UMassOnline

May 19, 2004

May 19, 2004– Boston, MA — University of Massachusetts President Dr. Jack Wilson today named David Gray CEO of UMassOnline. Gray has served as Interim CEO of UMassOnline since September 2, 2003 when Dr. Wilson, who was the founding CEO of the University’s online education division, left UMassOnline to become Interim President of the University. In addition to Gray’s role as CEO, he will continue to serve as Vice President for Information Services and CIO.

“During the past eight months, David Gray has provided UMassOnline with his own exceptionally steady, wise and collaborative brand of leadership in an interim capacity,” said Dr. Wilson. “I am very pleased that he has agreed to continue his leadership as permanent CEO of UMassOnline. We are fortunate to have a person of his stature and energy to lead this strategic division.”

“UMassOnline is on a growth trajectory thanks to the efforts of a talented and creative UMassOnline team and our campus partners,’’ Mr. Gray said. “UMassOnline is positioned for success on an international scale, and I look forward to participating in its continued development.’’

In his three and a half years tenure as Vice President for Information Services and Chief Information Officer for the University of Massachusetts, David has coordinated information technology planning, integration, and training across all University functions; helped expand teaching, research and student life services across the five campuses; and has been active in designing and supporting UMassOnline technology services.

“David has been a critical partner to UMassOnline since its inception in 2001,” said Wilson. “A seasoned and entrepreneurial leader in public higher education for more than 20 years, David understands how a broad portfolio of technologies and the collaborative efforts an excellent faculty can enhance teaching and learning in the University setting.” Gray’s leadership of UMassOnline coincides with strategic, University-wide technology initiatives and will foster an even more seamless integration of UMassOnline into the University’s infrastructure.

Prior to joining the University of Massachusetts, Mr. Gray served as the Vice Chancellor for Information Technology for the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education for five years. He lives in Westborough, Massachusetts with his wife, Margaret, and two children.
