DANTE and Internet2 connected high-performance research and education backbone networks across the Atlantic Ocean for the first time on October 8, 1999. The interconnection between Abilene and TEN-155 was a success from the start, so much so that the significant rate of growth of traffic in the past few months led to a need for a major increase in capacity.
