Click2learn Part of Elite Think Tank Driving Research on Next Generation of Powerful, Personalized, Interactive Learning Based on SCORM Specification

April 30, 2001

BELLEVUE, WA, – Click2learn (NASDAQ: CLKS) has joined the U.S. Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL), the IEEE Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO), and an elite group of leading technology companies to foster a new generation of powerful, personal and interactive learning technology.

As part of the Customized Learning Experience Online (CLEO) Lab, Click2learn will help research the optimal technological and instructional design of interoperable, adaptive learning content based on the ADL’s Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) specification. The group will explore the best ways to handle content in several different kinds of learning models, including performance support models and “intelligent” tutoring systems.

Ultimately, the project will pave the way for personalized learning experiences that adapt to the skills, knowledge and learning traits of individuals and groups.

Research completed by the think tank – which includes Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO), IBM (NYSE: IBM) Mindspan Solutions, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) and National Education Training Group, Inc.- will be funneled back to e-Learning standards groups to speed their work in extending e-Learning specifications and standards.

“The CLEO Lab project is probably the most important research the e-Learning industry has ever undertaken. It will establish the foundation and accelerate the growth of a new generation of e-Learning technologies able to deliver increasingly personalized, interactive and effective learning experiences,” said Claude Ostyn, Click2learn’s senior Learning Systems Strategist participating in the CLEO Lab.

Current ADL SCORM specifications provide a solid, standard framework that enables e-Learning technology companies to create learning objects and systems that work seamlessly together. However, these rules do not yet detail how to reassemble these objects on the fly, to deliver an individual a learning experience specifically tailored to their needs.

The CLEO Lab will take e-Learning standards to the next level, giving vendors a common process and language for combining learning content into rich learning experiences that can be delivered on virtually any standards-compliant learning management platform. This will expand the markets for personalized content, giving education companies an added incentive for developing increasingly interactive learning experiences and fostering growth of e-Learning itself.

To accelerate progress, the project will fund research by leading academics from Carnegie Mellon University and the Open University, U.K. The IEEE-ISTO will manage the day-to-day activities of the project. More information on CLEO Lab may be found at: http://www.cleolab.org.

Click2learn has supported and implemented more e-Learning specifications than any other vendor in the industry. The company’s learning management system, Ingenium, and large-scale content development platform, the Rapid e-Learning Development System (ReDS), support AICC specifications and are continuously being expanded to adhere to new specifications. Its ToolBook authoring software is the e-Learning industry’s only AICC-certified and SCORM-compliant course authoring tool.
