Click2learn Listed in Leader Quadrant in Magic Quadrant Update for Learning Management Systems

October 30, 2003

BELLEVUE, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Oct. 29, 2003–Click2learn (Nasdaq:CLKS), leader in enterprise productivity solutions, today announced that it has been listed in the leader quadrant in the 2nd-Half 2003 LMS Magic Quadrant Research Note, an update of the Gartner Magic Quadrant report covering Learning Management Systems (LMS).

The new note is an update to the 2003 LMS Magic Quadrant, originally released in February 2003. The quadrant has been reconfigured for the second half of 2003 due to changes in the learning industry landscape. In the updated report, Click2learn moves from the Visionary quadrant, where it had been placed in the previous report, to the “Leader” quadrant.

To build the Quadrant, Gartner evaluates providers on ability to execute and completeness of vision, placing them in one of four quadrants, including Niche Players, Challengers, Visionaries and Leaders. According to Gartner, leaders are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market.

Click2learn is the only provider of a comprehensive, single-platform enterprise productivity suite on the market, something that continues to set it apart in the industry.

In the report, Gartner points out the importance of offering a suite of applications. “Some of the key things clients should look at from LMS vendors is their current and future focus not only on being an LMS provider but also on their ability to provide an e-Learning Suite, which includes an LMS, LCMS (Learning Content Management System), Virtual Classroom/Delivery, and Professional Services. A more tightly integrated e-Learning Suite often means lower costs when it comes to Services.”

“Gartner is one of the industry’s most valuable resources for organizations seeking vendor information to drive their learning technology choices. As such, we are delighted that Gartner has listed us in the leader quadrant and confirmed our longtime belief in the strength of an integrated suite offering,” said Kevin Oakes, Click2learn chairman and CEO. “We believe our market leadership comes from a history of innovating groundbreaking technologies like Aspen that transform a company’s ability to meet its business goals and succeed in its industry. We are confident that Click2learn’s unique product strategy and mission-critical value proposition will continue to resonate among enterprises around the world.”

Gartner defines a learning management system (LMS) as the infrastructure on which e-learning can be built and delivered, and is composed of six main components, including:

— Registration capabilities (curriculum, courses, instructional responsibilities)

    — Management of curriculum and courses
    — Skills and records management
    — Student interfaces to courseware
    — Administration (for example, test and assessment capabilities, certification, instructor assignment to the courses, any regulatory requirements and history)
    — External system application programming interfaces, including human resources (HR) and, optionally, enterprise resource planning systems

The Aspen Learning Management System is a global, scalable, 100% Web-based application that enables an organization to manage all aspects of learning. Aspen LMS delivers robust capabilities in the areas of performance management, competency management, auditing and regulatory compliance, learner registration and tracking, records management, facilities and curricula management and reporting. Aspen provides unparalleled levels of support for any blend of delivery environments including self-paced, live interactive and instructor led courses. The result is a well-trained workforce, increased productivity and business success.
