AT&T Broadband Announces Technology Grant Competition for K-12 Educators

March 6, 2002

Atlanta, GA. – AT&T Broadband, the nation’s leading broadband services

provider, today announced a grant competition that will encourage K-12 educators

to work as a team to develop a new curriculum unit by integrating cable television

programming and/or Internet technologies into the classroom. Grants will be presented

to the winners in August of 2002 for projects slated for the 2002-2003 school

year.

Applications for the grant program, known as the AT&T Broadband Emerging

Technology Award, will be mailed to each school in AT&T Broadband’s

service area by the middle of March. Applications and guidelines are also available

online at www.attbroadband.com/education.

The entry deadline is Friday, May 31, 2002.

“AT&T Broadband actively supports education in metro Atlanta by providing

more than 500 hours of commercial-free educational programming per month to

schools, and we know that many educators use our offerings as an effective tool

to help innovate teaching and inspire learning,” says Steve White, senior

vice president of AT&T Broadband. “The AT&T Broadband Emerging

Technology Award will encourage teachers to take advantage of this programming

and help them incorporate it into their curriculum.”

In August, forty-eight teams will receive both a cash grant and a digital video

camera to implement their proposed project. Sixteen first-place teams will receive

a $3,000 grant and a digital video camera. Sixteen second-place teams will receive

a $2,000 grant and a digital video camera. Sixteen third-place teams will receive

a $1,000 grant and a digital video camera.

To be eligible for an AT&T Broadband Emerging Technology Award grant, educators

must be active K-12 classroom teachers in an area served by AT&T Broadband.

Eligible teams of four should be comprised of three educators and one administrator.

Teams applying for the grant will be asked to identify specific project objectives

including: information about the state or local education standard the project

will address; the role of each team member; a description of the impact the

project will have in the classroom and school; a description of how the district

will support the project; and an explanation of how the project’s success

will be measured.

Award recipients will be announced in late August. Each award-winning team

will then be asked to document their project during the 2002-2003 school year.

At the end of the school year, the teams will submit a multi-part video where

teachers and/or students explain the key elements of the newly implemented curriculum

unit to AT&T Broadband.
